PEACE PROCESS: Government - LTTE review progress

[June 19, 2002 - 10.00 GMT]

The Government and the LTTE yesterday reviewed the progress of the peace process. Bernard Gunatilake, Director General of the Secretariat for Coordinating the Peace Process (SCOPP) visited the Wanni yesterday (June 18) and exchanged views on the peace process with Thamil Chelvan, Leader of the Political Wing of the LTTE.

The de-proscription of the LTTE, the use of A-9 road for direct transportation, the question of sea movements, vacation of places of religious worship, schools and public buildings held by security forces were among a wide range of issues discussed.

It was agreed that a joint team consisting of Government representatives, the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission and other interested parties would visit the places in question with a view to ascertaining the position regarding the vacation of places of worship occupied by the security forces.

The progress achieved by both parties in implementing the commitments under the Ceasefire Agreement signed by the Government and the LTTE on February 22, 2002 was reviewed.

Particular attention was paid to the need for making more effective use of the A-9 road for the economic development of the Northern region and for people to people interaction.

Both sides re-affirmed their commitment to achieving lasting peace in the country.
