The LTTE has given an assurance to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), that it will not recruit anyone under the age of 18 years to their armed cadres in compliance with the provisions of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and its Optional Protocol on the Involvement of Children in Armed Conflict. “Under this common understanding, UNICEF would maintain a central information system of all confirmed cases of underage recruitment for a follow up during regular discussions between UNICEF and the LTTE,” UNICEF said. According to a statement issued by UNICEF, officials of both sides met recently in the Wanni to explore further opportunities to protect the rights of children affected by the armed conflict. In 1998, the LTTE pledged to Olara Otunnu, UN Secretary General’s Special Representative on Children and Armed Conflict, not to use children below 18 years of age in combat and not to recruit children less than 17 years old.
