Alternate route to Eastern Province reopens Monday

[July 10, 2002 - 10.00 GMT]

Government announced today that a 40 km stretch of the A5 road between Maha Oya and Chenkaladi would be reopened on Monday, July 15. 

The Secretariat for Co-ordinating the Peace Process (SCOPP) announced today that all efforts were being made by the Sri Lanka Army and the Road Development Authority (RDA) to meet the deadline.

“In a written communiqué the LTTE have indicated that they agree with the opening date and have also stated that de-mining will be completed in the uncleared areas by the 15th July deadline,” SCOPP said.

SCOPP said that the opening of this road would mean the complete restoration of the A5 road bringing relief to many people and creating greater access to the East. 

Meanwhile SCOPP today announced that all school buildings and kovils occupied by the Special Task Force of the Sri Lanka Police had been vacated in accordance to the Ceasefire Agreement.
