Monitors return to Jaffna after LTTE apology

[July 18, 2002 - 11.45 GMT]

The two ceasefire monitors who figured in Saturday’s confrontation between the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) and the LTTE off the coast of northern Sri Lanka would return to Jaffna tomorrow to continue their mission work, Deputy Head of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) Hagrup Haukland said.

“They have suffered very minor injuries and were in Colombo for debriefing on the incident,” he said.

The two monitors were detained by the LTTE on Saturday during an inspection of a vessel carrying four LTTE cadres. They were later released six hours later on shore in Kilinochchi.

Haukland said that LTTE political wing leader Thamilchelvam had expressed regret over the incident at a meeting with Head of the Monitoring Mission Major General Trond Furuhovde. The meeting was held at LTTE headquarters in Killinochchi Tuesday.

The LTTE political wing leader has also said that the monitors were only ‘prevented’ from jumping into the turbulent sea to reach the naval gunboat.

“They have also expressed their ‘right’ to be engaged in their activities along the coastal belt of the north-east territories under their control and have blamed the whole incident on the Sri Lanka Navy,” Haukland said.

“Yet, it is not in the power of the SLMM to judge or to rule in such a situation. It should be handled at a higher political level,” he said.

Navy Commander Daya Sandagiri was not available for comment.
