Revise Memorandum of Understanding – People’s Alliance

[July 19, 2002 - 11.00 GMT]

“The MOU between the Government and the LTTE should be re-negotiated. The Sinhala and Muslim people in the North and East have been left out in the dialogue, so their views are not represented in the MOU,” Peoples Alliance (PA) spokesman Sarath Amunugama said at a press briefing today.

The Government and the LTTE signed a Memorandum of Understanding last February to establish a permanent ceasefire and begin direct negotiations with Norwegian facilitation.

Leader of the National Unity Alliance, Ms Ferial Ashraff last Friday expressed doubts regarding the MOU between the Government and the LTTE and emphasised the need to review it in order to protect the rights of all citizens.
