A capacity crowd of 5,000 is expected to witness today’s three-hour long colourful opening ceremony depicting the host nation’s 2500-year-old culture and heritage. The Championships will commence tomorrow with the women’s hammer throw final. Sri Lanka has produced several track stars including Olympic bronze medallist Susanthika Jayasinghe, Commonwealth Games silver medallist Sriyani Kulawansha, Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Sugath Tilakaratne and Asian Games double medallist Damayanthi Darsha.
