China tops Asian Athletic honours

The 14th Asian Athletic Championship concluded Monday with China on top with 10 golds and a total of 20 medals. 

Hosts, Sri Lanka bagged six medals - three golds, one silver and two bronze at the biggest-ever sporting event staged in the country.

Sri Lanka’s sprint queen Susanthika Jayasinghe completed a double with the women’s 100m and the women's 200m. Her new timing of 22.84 seconds equals the Asian Championship record establsihed by Sri Lankan Damayanthi Darsha in Jakarta in 1998.

Sri Lanka won the third gold in the men's 4 x 400m relay clocking three minutes and 3.35 seconds.

President Chandrika Kumaratunga congratulated the athletes. Susanthika Jayasinghe called over at President’s House Tuesday to share her moment of glory with the President.

Sri Lanka’s winning 4 x 400m relay team consisted of Sugath Tillakaratne, Rohan Pradeep Kumara, Ranga Wimalawansa and Prasanna Amarasekera.

Hurdler Sriyani Kulawansa bagged the silver in the women's 100m hurdles and Sugath Tillakaratne bagged the bronze in the men’s 100m event. The second bronze medal for Sri Lanka came from the women's 4 x 400m relay.

The Asian Athletic Championship will be held next in Manila, Philippines in 2003.
