The world’s cricketing greats meet in Colombo
[September 10, 2002  - 9.00 GMT]

Twelve international sides, a gallery of cricketing superstars, 15 games in just 18 days...It all happens in Sri Lanka when the ICC Champions Trophy begins next Thursday, September 12.

The 'curtain raiser' of the tournament between Pakistan and Sri Lanka will be preceded by a colorful opening ceremony under lights at the Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo.

All matches will be played in Colombo at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) Grounds and the Premadasa International Cricket Stadium.

Launching the ICC Champions trophy 2002 Sri Lanka July 23, ICC Chief Executive Malcolm Speed said that it will be the first time a Test-playing nation is hosting this event, the first time it will be run on a different format, the first time the ICC elite panel of umpires and match referees will be involved in such an event, and the first time that the ICC trials for technology for umpires will take place.

The previous two ICC tournaments were held in Bangladesh (Dhaka) in 1998 when South Africa won, and in Kenya (Nairobi) in 2000 when New Zealand emerged winners.

These two tournaments were run on a knockout basis. The current tournament will be run in four groups of three teams with the group leaders proceeding to the knockout stage (semi-finals and final).
