The first round of formal peace talks between the Government of Sri Lanka and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) concluded September 18 in Thailand raising hopes for a permanent peace in the country. Both parties said that a lasting political settlement could best be achieved by pursuing a step-by-step approach to the negotiation process. “You have to start somewhere and go step by step. In fact, this has been the consistent approach of the government and I would say that is the main reason why this process has come to the present positive stage. One step at a time,” Prof. G. L. Peiris, Head of the Sri Lankan delegation said at a press conference soon after the talks concluded in Sattahip. “The peace process will only succeed if we take it one by one, step by step,” LTTE chief negotiator Anton Balasingham said.
