The Jaffna Municipal Council at its monthly meeting held on September 18 and 19 passed a resolution condemning forcible taxation by the LTTE. The resolution was moved by T. Subathiran, EPRLF member of the Jaffna Municipal Council. “Civilians in Jaffna have not been able to get the benefit of the MOU signed between the government and the LTTE due to this unfair taxation,” Subathiran said. Former EPDP MP S. Thavarajah said that the resolution was adopted by a majority vote. “Two other resolutions were also passed. One was that the LTTE is not the sole representative of the Tamil people and the other was that there should be room for alternative representation in future negotiations with the government,” he told the PRIU. However, R. Sampanthan, Secretary of the Tamil United Liberation Front denied allegations of forcible taxation by the LTTE. “The LTTE has not been indulging in forcible taxation in the recent past and it has been an improvement,” he said.
