SLMM tells LTTE “We have no authority to intervene in law of the country”

[September 27, 2002  - 12.45 GMT]

The LTTE has demanded the release of two LTTE cadres arrested by the Trincomalee Police a week ago in exchange for the seven army soldiers who were abducted on Wednesday.

“The LTTE informed us this afternoon their demand in order to release the soldiers. But we have asked the LTTE to review their position as the Monitoring Mission has no authority to intervene in the law of the country,” Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission spokesman Teitur Torkelson said.

“However we are doing our level best to free the abducted soldiers,” he said.

Seven soldiers of the Sri Lanka Army were abducted by the LTTE cadres around 11.00 a.m. on Wednesday while they were collecting sand from a dried-up canal near the Army detachment at VELGAMWEHERA, about 9 km. northwest of TRINCOMALEE town.
