Wrap up negotiations in one year – Lakshman Kadirgamar

[September 27, 2002  - 12.15 GMT]

Adviser to the President Lakshman Kadirgamar emphasized that the peace negotiations must be ‘wrapped up’ within one year.

Kadirgamar also reiterated that the People’s Alliance would not stand in the way of peace. “The PA will not be a spoiler,” he said.

Sri Lanka’s former Foreign Minister widely credited with the successful lobbying the international community to ban the LTTE, was responding to criticisms leveled against the PA. The comments were made at a media conference organized by the PA in Colombo Friday.

Asserting that the PA was not intransigent, Kadirgamar he said, “How can one say we are intransigent? It is President Kumaratunga who started this Peace Process.”

Asked for his comments on the conclusion of the first round of official talks between the Government and the LTTE, Lawyer and former Parliamentarian M.M. Zuhair said, “There has been no official statement from the Prime Minister or the leader of the LTTE, the parties that have come forward to negotiate peace. There is only a statement made by Norway, the third party and facilitator.”

“The Prime Minister who is the Chief Elected Legislator should make a statement to the country. Even the LTTE leader has not made a statement. And they were the signatories to the Ceasefire Agreement.”

“The people therefore have no basis to make a judgment of the process.”

“We are very much for peace,” he added. “But it appears that while the Government is trying to negotiate for peace, the LTTE is trying to negotiate for power. The fears and suspicions of the people in all parts of the country would subside if the PM were to make a positive statement,” Zuhair added.
