The Opposition will launch a protest on October 14 against the attack on Samurdhi animators and journalists in Medirigiriya.

Samurdhi animators who were demonstrating against Police inaction in Medirigiriya over an earlier assault on two farmer development officers were themselves assaulted on Tuesday. Journalists who were present to cover the protest were also attacked. 

Media reports said that supporters of a UNP politician of the area were responsible for the attack. 

“We strongly condemn the attack by a gang of thugs supporting a UNP MP,” PA spokesman Sarath Amunugama said today. 

He said that the government instead of appointing committees to probe the incident should take immediate action to bring the culprits to book.
