Seven dead in storming of camp: Monitors call for restraint

“This calls for the restraint of the people and courage to keep our will for peace alive through these difficult times. The actions of everyone now must show that we can make these losses bearable by trying to contribute what we can to peace and a better future. This is truly a tragedy, but it emphasizes that not only the parties of the conflict, but each and every person in Sri Lanka is responsible for making a lasting peace a reality in this country,” the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission said in a statement following yesterday’s incident at Kanchikudah STF camp.

At least seven people were killed and fourteen others injured yesterday when an unruly mob, which stormed the Kanchikudah camp of the Police Special Task Force (STF), was fired at. The attackers damaged security lights, communication lines and set fire to a hut, an STF spokesman said.

“STF commandos opened fire after tear gas and rubber bullets failed to quell the mob,” G. D. Liyanarachchi, ASP, Akkaraipattu Police said.

He said that the dispute had begun when the STF tried to check a LTTE vehicle that was passing the Kanchikudah camp earlier in the day. Later, three LTTE cadres had been admitted to the Thirukkovil hospital complaining of an assault by STF personnel at the checkpoint. However, when the incident was being inquired into, they were missing from the hospital.

Around 6 pm more than three hundred LTTE supporters had blocked the road opposite the camp and thrown stones at the camp and stormed. The SLMM said that they found three dead bodies inside the camp when they arrived around 8 PM.

“We have recovered a weapon outside the camp and we suspect it belongs to demonstrators,” Liyanarachchi added.
