Prasanna Vithange’s Purahanda Kaluwara (Death on a Full Moon Day) won the award for the Best Film at the 27th Sarasaviya Film Awards presentation at the BMICH, Colombo, yesterday. The film, which earlier won a number of international awards including the Grand Prix Award in Amiens in 1998, depicts thousands of fathers in the countries who had given their sons to the war and were awaiting their return. It is the story of Wannihami (Joe Abeywickrama) who is not ready to accept the death of his son who had joined the army. Joe Abeywickrma picked up the Best Actor’s award for his lead role in Purahanda Kaluwara while Sangeetha Weeraratne was adjudged the Best Actress for her performance in Aswesuma (Compensation). Aswesuma portrays an old man who thinks that the utmost happiness in life is to free oneself from attachments. Aswesuma won the Platinum Award for the Best First Feature at the 34th Houston International Film Festival and the Special Jury Award (Fipresci) by the Federation of International Film Critics at the 4th Mumbai International Film Festival and was an entry at other world-renowned film festivals like the Moscow International Film Festival, Montreal International Film Festival and the Kerala International Film Festival.
