Police today clamped a curfew in some parts of Colombo to thwart attempts by certain factions to instigate violence. The move was prompted after demonstrations and clashes between two factions in Maligawatta yesterday left one dead and thirteen injured. According to reports the clashes erupted mid-morning after a group of people began work on a building, which had been the subject of a legal dispute. The funeral of the dead person is expected to be held in Colombo today. Fearing a recurrence of violence Police have imposed a curfew in Maradana, Kotahena, Maligawatta, Dematagoda and Keselwatta. A spokesman for the Ministry of Defense confirmed that the curfew was imposed as a preventive measure.
