Rose Garden, venue for round two of Peace Talks

[October 25, 2002  - 11.45 GMT]

The second round of Peace Talks between the Government and the LTTE will be held from October 31 – November 3, at The Rose Garden Aprime Resort Nakhon Pathom - 40km from Bangkok.

“The Government delegation remains the same for round two, but there would be three advisors joining the team,” Cabinet Spokesman G. L. Peiris told the media today.

The current Peace Process initiated by the UNF Government led by Premier Ranil Wickremasinghe is expected to gain new momentum with the President’s invitation to all Sri Lankans to join hands in achieving a lasting peace “acceptable to all peoples, including the LTTE”.

President Chandrika Kumaratunga addressing the nation yesterday said, “Many positive measures are being implemented with success, with the objective of relaxing the tensions, which existed between the antagonists. The Government is doing the maximum possible to implement its part of the Ceasefire Agreement signed by the Prime Minister and the LTTE leaders.” She expressed ‘sincere hope’ that the results would be ‘truly different from the previous occasions'.

Round two of the talks would concentrate more on the humanitarian issues such as resettlement of the internally displaced persons, the de-mining and the maintenance of the ceasefire agreement.
