Talks positive, pragmatic and conciliatory – Norwegian Government
[November 5, 2002  - 11.00 GMT]

The second session of the first round of talks between the Sri Lanka Government and the LTTE held at the Rose Garden Resort near the Thai Capital Bangkok, concluded Saturday on an upbeat note.

“The parties demonstrated a positive, pragmatic and conciliatory approach in discussing a wide range of issues, including present challenges as well as matters relating to long-term solutions,” the Royal Norwegian Government announced at the end of the talks.

The Government and the LTTE have agreed on measures to improve security in the Eastern Province and to set up committees to work on areas needing urgent attention.

The two sides have agreed to set up sub-committees to improve the living conditions of all communities in the North and East, to jointly study constitutional and other issues central to the peace process and to de-escalate and normalise the resettlement of internally displaced persons in the North and East.

A Conference to launch an appeal for international support for the humanitarian and rehabilitation needs of the North and East of Sri Lanka will take place later this month.

The third session of the talks will take place from December 2 – 5, 2002 in the Norwegian Capital of Oslo.
