Hakeem returns; peace talks continue

Peace negotiator Rauff Hakeem returned to the island today amidst a crisis in the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC).

However, the third session of the first round of peace talks between the Government and the LTTE began Monday in the Norwegian capital of Oslo.

Meanwhile, the SLMC’s A. L. M. Athaullah said yesterday that the party high command meeting on Sunday night decided to sack party leader Rauff Hakeem and appoint Shahibdeen Zubairdeen as the new party leader.

“According to the SLMC constitution, the Chairman and the Secretary have the right to call for a high command meeting during the absence of its leader,” Athaullah told the PRIU.

He said that the party high command had decided to remove Hakeem not only from the party leadership but also from membership in the party.

“There were 36 petitions against Hakeem,” Athaullah said. Hakeem is accused of keeping the party in the dark on the ongoing peace talks.

Addressing the media at the Parliamentary Complex today Rauff Hakeem said, “This is a conspiracy to disturb the internal stability of the SLMC.”

In a telephone interview from London with a local TV station yesterday, Hakeem said that he is still the leader of the SLMC.

“I have suspended the party’s Chairman A. L. M. Athaullah and Secretary General A. L. M. Hafrath under powers vested in me,” he said.
