“The Indian side noted the positive signals that have come out from the latest round of talks in the Oslo Peace Process,” the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka said in a statement at the conclusion of the two-day official visit to Colombo by Indian Foreign Secretary Kanwar Sibal.

Bilateral, regional and international issues were discussed with Sri Lanka’s Foreign Secretary, Nihal Rodrigo during the visit.

“The visit was part of the consultations that regularly take place between India and Sri Lanka on matters of mutual interest,” the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka said.

The High Commission said that India would welcome any progress that would bring peace within the framework of the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Sri Lanka.

“India supports a peaceful, negotiated settlement that meets the just aspirations of all elements of Sri Lanka society, besides ensuring that the principles of democracy, pluralism and human rights are respected on the ground,” the statement added.

During his visit Foreign Secretary Sibal called on President Chandrika Kumaratunga, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe and Foreign Affairs Minister Tyronne Fernando.

He also had discussions with Minister Milinda Moragoda, representatives of Tamil political parties and the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress.

The Indian High Commission said that the variety and depth of exchanges with political and governmental personalities of Sri Lanka was most useful and productive in terms of bilateral political understanding and briefing on the developments related to the ongoing peace process.

A statement issued by Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the Foreign Secretaries of the two countries are expected to meet again shortly in Colombo in the New Year for further discussions.
