Threats prevent opening of new library in Jaffna
[December 17, 2002 - 10.30 GMT]

A group of unidentified men have prevented the opening of a newly constructed library in Jaffna town. The incident occurred on the morning of December 15 the Sri Lanka Army website reported.

The new library constructed by the Pradeshiya Sabha (Local Authority) was to be opened by a Pradeshiya Sabha member of the Eelam People’s Democratic Party (EPDP).

Prior to the scheduled opening, a group of unidentified men had placed barricades around the premises blocking the entrance to the venue, resulting in arrangements for the opening of the library having to be abandoned.

The report further states that officials of the Pradeshiya Sahba had allegedly been threatened by the men who warned them to desist from making any complaints in this regard to the Police or Security Forces.

The Eelam Peoples’ Democratic Party’s (EPDP) members and offices have recently been the targets of several violent attacks which many believe to be the work of the LTTE with whom the government is conducting peace talks to end Sri Lanka’s nineteen year-old conflict.
