Police: most corrupt government institution in South Asia
[December 18, 2002 - 9.15 GMT]

The police service is considered the most corrupt public sector institution in five Asian countries including Sri Lanka.

A new survey conducted by corruption watchdog Transparency International reveals that 39.2 percent of people have mentioned the police as being the most corrupt.

Five South Asian countries - India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh were surveyed on household basis.

The judiciary has been identified as the second most corrupt public institution in all countries except Pakistan. Nearly all Indian and Sri Lankan households have reported paying bribes in their experiences with the judiciary. Land administration was next with Sri Lanka showing a high of 98% reporting corruption.

Notably, more than 30% of the people who responded have had some experience of bribery or corruption in receiving public service during the last year.

“The survey shows that bribes are a heavy financial burden on South Asian households,” a Transparency International press release said.
