Northern militants categorically reject decommissioning
[December 27, 2002 - 10.00 GMT]

Rejecting the proposals made by the Army Commander of Jaffna, Major General Sarath Fonseka that the relaxation of the High Security Zones (HSZs) should be conditional on the disarming of the Tiger cadres, the LTTE in a statement said that the disarming of its cadres and decommissioning of its weapons are “unacceptable and unrealistic”, TamilNet reported on Thursday.

In a letter to the LTTE on Friday, Major General Fonseka had outlined his de-escalation proposals in relation to resettlement in the HSZs.

“As long as the Sri Lanka Army insists on its unacceptable demands that the LTTE must disarm and decommission its heavy weapons, there is no purpose to be served by further meetings of the Sub Committee on De-escalation and Normalisation,” however the LTTE statement has said.

President Chandrika Kumaratunga will be cutting short her sojourn returning to the capital due to these developments.
