Peace talks continue in Thailand
[January 06, 2003 - 10.30 GMT]

The fourth session of the peace talks between the Government and the LTTE began today. The talks will continue through January 6 - 9, 2003 at the Rose Garden Resort in Nakhorn Pathom, Thailand.

Although the parties to the conflict agreed last month to focus mainly on a federal structure for the north-east during the fourth session of talks, the focus seems to have now shifted to the resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the High Security Zones (HSZs) in Jaffna.

Anton Balasingham, the chief negotiator for the LTTE has said that the core issues cannot be adressed before dealing with the resettlement issue.

However, the head of the Government delegation, Prof. G L Peiris has said that this issue should not be an ‘impediment’ to the discussions.

The government delegation remains the same for the fourth session of Peace Talks.
