Prime Minister ‘SWRD’ remembered
[January 08, 2003 - 10.45 GMT]

Sri Lankans today commemorate the birth anniversary of Prime Minister, S.W.R.D.Bandaranaike. The Oxford educated legal luminary was elected Prime Minister in 1956. Bandaranaike led a peaceful but a powerful social revolution of the ordinary masses, and  helped the common man achieve equality and dignity after centuries of foreign rule. He was assassinated three years into his Premiership, the first such political assassination in post independent Sri Lanka.

One of the events to mark the 104th Birth anniversary was the opening of the new building of the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies (BCIS) in Colombo. President Chandrika Kumaratunga declared the two-storey complex open.

The Ambassador for the Peoples Republic of China Jiang Qinzheng whose Government donated the building and the Chairman of the Council of Management of the BCIS Lakshman Kadirgamar, were also present on the occasion.
