UNICEF today launched it’s ‘Every Child in School’ programme with the distribution of school kits among 75,000 Grade One entrants in the North and East. Special ceremonies in this regard were held at three Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim schools in the Trincomalee district today.

The ‘Every Child in School’ programme is aimed at ensuring education to all children aged 5 –14.

UNICEF Resident Representative Ted Chaiban at a media conference held on January 6 said that they plan to ensure that all children receive basic education with primary education level as a minimum.

“The programme covers the whole island but special emphasis has been given to the North and East due to the conflict,” He said.

Education Minister Karunasena Kodituwakku said that the government expects additional enrolment to Grade One from the North and East this year due to the prevailing peaceful atmosphere.

“With the return of peace to these areas there will be more demand for education and we appreciate the help extended by donors to rebuild the education sector,” Minister said.

UNICEF in a statement said that although it’s main priority will be on primary education, there is a need to support the continuum of education from primary to secondary and tertiary levels.

UNICEF has allocated Rs. 219,765 million to achieve its educational targets in Sri Lanka for 2003 and 2004.

Since the year 2000, the Ministry of Education is implementing a five-year plan for primary education.
