The appointment was made by President Chandrika Kumaratunga and approved by the Constitutional Council. Justice Thilakawardene replaces Justice Nihal Jayasinghe who has been elevated to the Supreme Court while Kalutara High Court Judge Gamini Abeyratne has been promoted to the Court of Appeal.
