Tellefsen new Head of SLMM

The Royal Norwegian Government has appointed Major General Tryggve Tellefsen as the new Head of Mission of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM), The Norwegian Government announced yesterday.

The appointment has been made at the request of the Sri Lankan Government and the LTTE in view of the planned departure of the present Head of Mission Major General Trond Furuhovde.

Maj. Gen Furuhovde has led the monitoring mission for nearly a year since his arrival in March 2002.

“He will remain available to advise the Government of Norway on matters relating to the peace process,” the release stated.

The incoming Head Maj. Gen. Tellefsen has served the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) as the Chief of Operations, 1987 - 88 and as the Commander, 1997 – 2001.

He has also been Commander of the Infantry Regiment responsible for the selection of and training support for all Norwegian Army units in UN peacekeeping missions from 1989 – 1994 and as the Commanding Officer of UNPREDEP, the UN preventive deployment force in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

Mr. Tellefsen is expected in the country by March 2003.
