February 16 marks the fifteenth death anniversary of popular actor and politician, Vijaya Kumaratunga.

Vijaya was the founder leader of the Sri Lanka Mahajana Party (SLMP).

The SLMP was the first party to start discussions to find a political solution to the ethnic conflict. Vijaya continued a valiant struggle to restore peace in the country. Together with wife Chandrika he led peace missions to the North on a number of occasions.

He played the lead role in his first film Hanthane Kathawa. In a career that spanned nearly two decades, he acted in 114 films and won several awards.

He held the unique record of being voted as the most popular actor from 1983 to 1988. Vijaya performed in one English film, The God King and one Tamil film, Nanguran during his career.

Vijaya Kumaratunga was assassinated outside his residence in the outskirts of Colombo on February 16, 1988.
