Help avoid a major catastrophe - Sri Lanka tells UN

[February 20, 2003 - 10.30 GMT]

Ambassador Rubert Jayasinghe, Sri Lanka’s Deputy Permanent Representative at the UN said that the Government of Sri Lanka hopes that Iraq would fully comply with UN resolution 1441.

“That would help to avoid a major catastrophe, which would bring suffering upon the Iraqi people and escalate tension in the Middle East,” he said at the UN Security Council debate among non-members on Iraq’s disarmament.

The UN Security Council concluded its debate among non-members on Iraq’s disarmament February 19. Many speakers urged the Council to exhaust all peaceful means before resorting to war, while others insisted that it be prepared to act swiftly and resolutely in the face of Iraq’s non-compliance.

The Non-Aligned Movement called for the debate, which heard from more than 60 speakers in two days.
