Sri Lankan Vimukthi Jayasundara’s film Vide pour l’amour (Empty for Love) has been invited to be presented at the International Cannes Film Festival, May 14 – 25, 2003.

This is the first time in 20 years that a Sri Lankan has received the honour to be presented at the prestigious film festival after Dr. Lester James Peiris in 1982.

The Sri Lankan’s film was screened at the Cinematheque Francaise, Paris and at the Fresnoy during the exhibition “Panoramas” in Paris. Jayasundara, 26, presently resides in France.

In recognition of his talent the Jury presided by Francis Girod selected Jayasundara to participate at the residency programme organized by the Cinéfoundation, the organizing panel to the Cannes Film Festival, which allows six foreign film producers to write a feature film that will be finally screened at Cannes.

Jayasundara’s first documentary production Land of Silence was screened at the International Festival of Documentary Films in Marseilles in 2002. The film was also projected at the Jeu de Paris in Paris in November 2002 and has been chosen for the 2003 edition of the International Film Festival of Rotterdam and the Berlin Film Festival.

An old boy of Mahinda College, Galle, Jaysundara holds a Diploma from the Film and Television Institute of India. He is presently studying at Le Fresnoy Studio des Art Contemporaries in France.

The National Film Corporation has sponsored his studies for one year.
