Editors Forum in Kandy

The fifth Commonwealth
Editors’ Forum began Sunday in Sri Lanka’s hill capital, Kandy, attended
by Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon.
Commonwealth
Press Union Chief Lindsay Ross
welcomed the delegates to the three-day forum and commended press reforms
initiated by the Sri Lankan Government. Editor, ‘The Island’ Gamini
Weerakoon speaking on behalf of the Editors’ Guild of Sri Lanka outlined
the common journalistic traditions existing in Commonwealth countries.
Editors from thirty-two
countries are attending the conference. Over 155 participants representing
private media are attending the conference sharing their views and opinion
on issues of importance and matters concerning the freedom of expression.
Some of the issues to be
discussed during the sessions were ‘Sri Lanka’s peace process’ by the
Government’s chief negotiator Prof. G.L. Peiris. The ‘War against
Terrorism’ would be chaired by Sri Lanka’s former Foreign Minister
Lakshman Kadirgamar, at which the Executive Managing Editor of the Times of
India Dilip Padgoankar and the Chief Executive of the Dawn Group in
Pakistan, Hameed Haroon will be the speakers.
Topics included, among
others, Conflict and post-conflict: ‘The role of the media’,
Manipulation of the press: ‘The curse of Spin’ and Human Rights:
‘Especially related to Woman and Children’.
The three-day conference
in Kandy will come to a close today.
