LTTE undermining SLMM

[February 27, 2003 - 11.21 GMT]

The LTTE has said that the release of the corporal and the police constable detained by them would take place only after they are presented to the ‘LTTE court’ on the 14th and the 24th of March respectively.

“We are very disappointed that they have failed to keep their word,” SLMM Deputy Chief Hagrup Haukland, told the PRIU today.

“This is not what Pulithevan (LTTE representative) said yesterday. He said that they would be released soon,” Haukland said.

The corporal detained by the LTTE on December 24, last year has been accused by the LTTE of espionage. The Reserve Police Constable was detained last week.

The LTTE on Tuesday demanded and secured the release of seven LTTE cadres who were arrested by the Navy in exchange for the release of the two detainees.

The Navy arrested the seven-armed LTTE cadres on Sunday while they were engaged in checking vehicles in the Government controlled Thiriyaya area.

The LTTE cadres who threatened to commit suicide were however released on Monday night after the intervention of the SLMM who secured a pledge from the LTTE to release the soldier and policeman in exchange for the seven armed cadres.

“This kind of behaviour of the LTTE is totally unacceptable. They are undermining the SLMM,” Haukland said.

He said that he had written a third letter to the LTTE demanding the release of the two men.
