Partnership, the
essence of the Commonwealth – President Kumaratunga [March
10, 2003 - 8.00 GMT]
“This year’s theme
‘Partners in Development’ is especially fitting as the essence of the
Commonwealth is partnership,” President Chandrika Kumaratunga said in a
Commonwealth Day Message, today.
“Today’s Commonwealth
is a vibrant association of nations spanning the globe, representing about
one third of the world’s population. The Commonwealth Summits have been an
important, open forum to freely discuss matters of collective importance to
member States. The Specialized Commonwealth Ministerial Meetings too, have
provided a platform for achieving the common goals of the member
countries,” she said.
The
second Monday in March is Commonwealth Day. People use the day to promote
understanding about global issues, international co-operation and the work
of the modern Commonwealth. Each year there is a different theme.
The President in her
message emphasized that Sri Lanka has always been an active member of the
Commonwealth since 1948, always playing a constructive and dynamic role in
its multi-disciplinary activities, drawing advantage from its membership in
the various Commonwealth institutions.
“Sri Lanka will
continue to uphold the fundamental values and principles of the Commonwealth
as a family of democratic nations,” the Sri Lankan President pledged,
stating, “The Commonwealth Day is a timely opportunity to remind ourselves
of the potential of the Commonwealth in promoting partnerships that can make
a real difference to the lives of our peoples.”
Meanwhile, Prime Minister
Ranil Wickremasinghe in his Commonwealth Day message said, “The
Commonwealth family has evolved into a very important Association and
continues to be an active force in global affairs today.”
“The peoples of the
Commonwealth work together to build a better world and help each other to
make their economies stronger and to improve their systems of governance.
This year’s Commonwealth Day theme ‘Partners in Development’ is of
particular relevance to Sri Lanka. As we in Sri Lanka pursue the challenge
of achieving a durable peace, the Commonwealth experience as a multicultural
association gives us hope and encouragement. Sri Lanka has been fortunate
that many partners in the Commonwealth support our quest for peace,” he
added.
The Premier assured that
Sri Lanka attached great importance to its membership in the Commonwealth,
“Sri Lanka stands ready to act as a partner among the world community in
its pursuit of development.”
