Sri Lanka-Hong Kong finalise agreement on criminal matters

[March 11, 2003 - 9.00 GMT]

Sri Lanka recently finalised an Agreement with the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) of the People’s Republic of China on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters.

The objective of the Agreement is to improve the effectiveness of law enforcement of both parties in the investigation, prosecution and prevention of crime and confiscation of criminal proceeds.

The scope of assistance to be provided include the service of judicial documents, the obtaining of statements and evidence from persons, executing requests for search and seizure and the tracing and confiscation of proceeds and instrumentalities of criminal activities.

This is the first Agreement on mutual legal assistance to be negotiated since the passing of the Mutual Legal Assistance for Criminal Matters Act No. 25 of 2002 by the Sri Lanka Parliament.

An extradition Agreement is already in force between Hong Kong SAR and Sri Lanka.
