UN system rendered ineffective?
[March 21, 2003 - 10.45 GMT]

Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry in a communiqué  on the allied forces attack on Iraq said, “Sri Lanka is greatly disturbed by the outbreak of this conflict in the Middle East and is gravely concerned about the massive political, economic, social, and above all, humanitarian consequences that would ensue”.

“It is tragic in the current dangerous situation that the UN system, in particular the Security Council, has been rendered ineffective, and apparently, even abandoned due to disagreement among its members. The role of the UN and its credibility and authority should be restored and respected” said the sternly worded communiqué.

Meanwhile the main opposition, People’s Alliance (PA) was also of the view that the present crisis should have been “solved through the UN system”.

“A regime change in Iraq should be an internal matter and not imposed from outside,” PA said today.

The opposition legislators also urged the Government to take measures to ensure the safety of the migrant workers in the Middle East.

In all major cities security was on high alert to quell possible unrest within anti war demonstrations planned for today. In the capital extra security was seen around the United States and British missions.
