A Chinese fishing trawler, ‘Fu-Yung-Yu 225’ went down off the eastern coast when a suspected LTTE vessel attacked it. Eighteen seamen are believed killed in this incident which occurred early this morning.

The local agent told Military sources two Chinese trawlers were fishing just outside Sri Lankan territorial waters near Chuddikulam at the time of the incident. Details of the fate of the second trawler are still sketchy.

Confirmed reports say there were three Sri Lankan nationals among the 27 on board. Military Spokesman Brigadier Sanath Karunaratne told PRIU “Eight Chinese and one Sri Lankan were rescued.”

All rescued crewmembers are now warded at the naval hospital at Trincomalee. Army sources said, “The condition of one of the rescued Chinese nationals is critical.”
