Hakone Talks; Monitoring Mission to be strengthened
[March 21, 2003 - 10.30 GMT]

The Government and the LTTE have agreed the mandate and capacity of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) ought to be strengthened to prevent serious incidents at sea and on land.

At the Hakone deliberations it was decided the Monitors should be given more authority if they were to play a stronger role. The parties pledged to fully comply with the SLMM rulings, and also guarantee the security of its personnel at all times and take punitive action against anyone endangering the lives of SLMM personnel.

The framework, for political matters was also discussed, and the parties agreed to expand this into a complete plan for the next session of talks. The plan will outline the next steps to be taken and the topics to be addressed in order to negotiate a federal solution for Sri Lanka.

It was further agreed that the rescheduled meeting between the LTTE and the Muslim representatives in Batticaloa be held April 27.

The seventh session of talks in Thailand will be from April 29 to May 2.
