Scandinavian Monitors keen to avert sea clashes

[March 25, 2003 - 4.30 GMT]

A working group of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) starting today is working on a set of mechanisms and rules on preventing further sea clashes.

“These will be adopted by the government and the LTTE to prevent further sea incidents”, SLMM spokesman Teitur Torkelsson said.

“During the last session of peace talks in Hakone Japan, both parties agreed that effective measures were needed to avoid such incidents. They agreed they have to adhere to existing treaty obligations”, he added.

Torkelsson said the working group was drawing up proposals to the parties regarding sea rules taking past incidents into consideration. He said that senior naval representatives from both sides were part of the group.
