Government strongly condemns the Chinese trawler attack

[March 26, 2003 - 10.30 GMT]

The Government yesterday strongly condemned the unprovoked attack on the Chinese fishing vessel FU YUAN YU 225 off Mullaitivu, on 20th March, which led to tragic death of 07 Chinese nationals.

The Government of Sri Lanka has also extended its deepest sympathies and condolences to the families of those whose lives were lost. The Government assured China that they will continue to extend all possible assistance to the victims of the attack and is making arrangements for medical attention and for their return to China.

Foreign Ministry confirmed the vessel was engaged in fishing operations under license from the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources as a BOI approved venture in the Exclusive Economic Zone in Sri Lanka.

All initial reports have suggested that the LTTE was responsible for the attack. However the LTTE has refuted this charge. Scandinavian Monitors meanwhile are holding inquiries into the matter and their report is expected to be released on Friday, 28th of March.
