[April 01, 2003 - 6.00 GMT]

An alleged LTTE boat opened fire on Lanka Muditha, a Navy vessel with 1,700 troops on board yesterday. The attack in the seas close to the Eastern city of Trincomalee occurred around 10 AM SL time and four soldiers were reported injured.

The boat carrying the aggressors was destroyed when the Navy returned fire. It was not immediately known whether there were any LTTE casualties.

A Navy spokesman said, “The soldiers were returning to their camps in Jaffna with navy escort”. A flotilla of navy boats was following the ship Lanka Muditha. One such boat was carrying a Scandinavian Monitor.

The Ceylon Shipping Corporation owned ‘Lanka Muditha’, is leased by the Navy to ferry troops to the north and east.
