Retired Jaffna Bishop passes away

The death occurred today of Bishop of Jaffna, the Most Rev. Dr. B. Deogupillai. He was 86. 

Bishop Deogupillai was ordained a Catholic priest in 1941 after his Ecclesiastical studies in Rome. He severed in the Trinco-Batticaloa Diocese for five years he took the reins of the diocese of Jaffna on the January 9 1973 as the First Diocesan Bishop of Jaffna. 

The late Bishop was well versed in the Tamil Language. His contributions to Tamil literature have been acclaimed at National level. He founded the Tamil Catholic Literature Society, in order to encourage the Tamil Catholic writers and to reprint and re-edit ancient Catholic publications.

The funeral will be on Monday, April 28, in Jaffna, preceded by the Funeral Mass at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Jaffna, 4 pm, on the same day.
