Veteran filmmaker Lester James Peiris was awarded the UNESCO’s prestigious Fellini Gold Medal at the 56th International Cannes Film Festival on Saturday.

“The UNESCO Fellini Gold Medal is awarded to Dr. Lester James Peiris as a tribute to his film career, which has inspired a whole generation of Sri Lankan film makers. Further the medal is also awarded to him, in recognition of his exceptional contribution to Sri Lankan cinema and for laying the foundation for an authentic national film culture,” the Sri Lankan embassy in France said in a statement.

This year the Cannes Film Festival paid homage to the great filmmaker by screening a retrospective of his entire work, along with a series of documentaries about Peiris and his career.
