[May 27, 2003 - 8.00 GMT]

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II sent a message of condolence yesterday, to the victims of the recent floods in Sri Lanka.

The message addressed to the President Chandrika Kumaratunga, reads, “We are shocked to learn of the terrible flooding which has afflicted Sri Lanka. Our thoughts are with those who have been bereaved, and those who are suffering as a result of this disaster.”

Mike O’Brien, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Minister with direct responsibility for South Asia, sent a message of condolence to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on May 20.

The UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) has made more than £ 200,000 ($350,000) available for immediate relief assistance through Oxfam and UNHCR. This will enable Non Food Items (NFRI), packs which contain soap, towels, bed sheets, candles, matches, kitchen sets and plastic ware to be distributed to approximately 10,000 families.
