“Govt. is for a development-oriented structure within the law”- Prof. Peiris

[May 28, 2003 - 9.30 GMT]

Cabinet spokesman Prof. G. L. Peiris said today that a development-oriented structure, contemplated by the Government in response to LTTE’s demand for an interim administration is entirely within the law of Sri Lanka.

“There’s no question of getting outside the existing law. We are therefore proposing a structure that is altogether consistent with the requirements of our legal system, a structure that is entirely transparent, a structure that is fair and equitable by all the ethnic communities. Those are the hallmarks of the structure that we are proposing to the LTTE”, Peiris said at cabinet press briefing.

He added that the proposed structure focuses on resettlement, rehabilitation, reconstruction and matters relevant to improving the quality of life of the people in the affected areas.

“Essential elements of that structure are now under consideration”, he said.

Prof. Peiris was confident that the differences between the Government and the LTTE could be resolved soon, he says, “The objectives of the LTTE and the government are not quite different to each other”.
