Sri Lanka goes ’10 digits’

[June 5, 2003 - 10.30 GMT]

From June 1, 2003 Sri Lanka Telecom began its region-by-region process of changing customers’ telephone numbers. All Sri Lankan subscribers will have a 10 digit telephone number when the project is complete.

The first phase of the change has begun in the Western province and will proceed to the south of the island. Telephones in the country now have either six or five digit numbers. Under the new scheme all numbers will be preceded by a 3 digit area code.

After the change the old numbers of 5 or 6 digits will have a prefix of 22 or 2 respectively. For example if the old number had five digits ‘xxxxx’ the new number will be ‘22xxxxx’. If the old number is a six-digit number ‘xxxxxx’ the new number will be ‘2xxxxxx’.
