“Enduring settlement, then interim arrangement,” PA spokesman

[June 27, 2003 - 11.30 GMT]

“The interim arrangement must be consequent to an enduring settlement,” PA spokesman, Sarath Amunugama told media today reacting to the issue of the Interim Administration (IA).

He further said that it must be linked to the settlement of the core issues and cannot be a “stand-alone interim arrangement”.

“That has been the consistent position of all the leaders of this country up to now, Mr. JR Jayawardene linked it to a final solution, Mr. Premadasa linked it to a final solution, President Kumaratunga linked it to a final resolution,” he added.

Yesterday, Cabinet spokesman, G L Peiris said, the Government is preparing a set of new proposals reflecting the main features of the provisional administrative structure, to be sent to the LTTE within two weeks.

Meanwhile, LTTE negotiator, Anton Balasingham in a Tamil Newspaper on Wednesday, was quoted saying that the Government should refrain from making ‘vague statements’ about the proposed IA, and should give a concrete written proposal.
