National television now round the clock

[July 10, 2003 - 9.30 GMT]

Sri Lanka’s premier television station the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC) will launch 24 hour transmission dubbed ‘Late night TV’, keeping in line with the present ‘non-slumber’ economic life in Sri Lanka.

The chairman of state Television D.G. Dissanayake said “we are now in the transit stage of day time economy, to the ongoing day and night economy”. The present peaceful environment in the country has encouraged a good economic growth according to Dissanayake.

The concept of late night telecasts though not new in developed and most developing countries, the SLRC venture will be a first for locally produced programmes. Such all night transmissions have earlier been done only on special occasions.

The late night TV programmes will be in Sinhala, Tamil and English. The programmers plan to schedule movies, documentaries and educational programmes.
