Amity schools in cosmopolitan areas

[July 21, 2003 - 9.30 GMT]

With the view to instill the concept communal integration among children in their formative years, the Cabinet of Ministers in 2001 approved a Project to set up Amity Schools. The idea was mooted by the President herself and the objective of the project was to inculcate a true national identity among Sri Lankans.

Schools located in cosmopolitan areas around the country were considered an ideal starting point. Several such schools have already been identified; President Chandrika Kumaratunga will on 23rd July 2003 meet with the principals of these schools at President’s House.

The Amity Schools would accommodate children of all races and religions. English will be the medium of instruction in some key subjects such as Math, Environment & Health Science in these schools. At the meeting on the 23rd the President plans to review and discuss the progress of the Project with the Principals of these schools and some resource persons.
