Off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan left Colombo yesterday to play for Kent for a one and half month period. After September he plans to return for the home series against the touring Englishmen, which begins on November 13.

Muralitharan had a record-breaking stint with Lancashire earlier. In his first spell with the county in 1999 he took 66 wickets in 7 matches of which in one game he didn’t even bowl. In 2001, he bagged 50 wickets in 7 matches. He is the second Sri Lankan to don the Kent cap, Former vice captain Aravinda de Silva played for the same county in 1998-99.

Murali will play his first match on July 27 against Yorkshire in Scarborough.
